Law enforcement officials in South Carolina have apprehended a Columbia resident on charges of fraudulently obtaining thousands of dollars in pandemic relief funds by falsely claiming ownership of a business. Quentel Renee Brevard, a 36-year-old individual, is facing allegations of submitting a fraudulent application for a Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021.

According to warrants provided by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), Brevard purported to be the owner of a hair salon, declaring a gross income of $95,000 for the year 2020 in her loan application. Subsequently, Brevard was granted a PPP loan totaling $19,790.

However, an inquiry initiated by the South Carolina Office of Inspector General prompted SLED investigators to discover that Brevard was not a licensed cosmetologist, as per state records. Her only official association with a business was as the registered agent for a company named Brevard Financial Services, LLC. Furthermore, a warranted examination of her bank account revealed no financial transactions consistent with the operation of a hair salon, as claimed in her loan application. Additionally, it was determined that her actual gross income for 2020 amounted to less than $50,000, significantly less than what had been declared in the PPP application.

On September 5, authorities officially charged Quentel Renee Brevard with the offense of obtaining a signature or property by false pretense, specifically valued at over $10,000. Brevard’s arrest was executed with the assistance of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, and she was subsequently booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
